My favourite podcasts do listen to while I work

As a freelancer, I spend most of my days by myself, working away on my computer. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy what I do; nonetheless, I do miss the background noises of a typical busy office, the occasional chat with my neighbouring colleague, the random gossip in the coffee room and the overall hustle & bustle of the office, working away as the day moves along.

This is the main reason I tend to gravitate towards either listening to music or podcasts on a 24h basis. Below i’ll share with you some of my all time favourite podcasts.

Graphic Design
Combating creative block is real. Nurturing that creative spark while learning something new every day is vital for any designer. Here are a couple of podcasts that get my creative juices flowing:

Adventure in Design launched in 2013, has had more guests on the show than I dare to count. Its host, Mick Brickey, explores how we designers can be more productive and have a meaningful mindset, while achieving happiness in our professional lives.

• Designed to help creatives make a good living by making great art, Creative Pep Talk tackles creative wellbeing from lots of different angles. Through ridiculous analogies, amazing illustrations and personal stories, host Andy J. Miller really puts a spin on creativity.

• This podcast is hosted by Design Observer’s Jessica Helfand and Pentagram’s Michael Bierut. The Design of Business, the Business of Design is an insight into the complex topic of design in a corporate environment. In it, they explore how design works within complex organisations to shape decisions, ideas, products, and more.

Entrepreneurship
When I decided to embark on this adventure, with little to no experience in the business side of my profession, I decided to turn to my trustworthy friend - the internet. While this was like searching for a needle in a haystack, you can still definitely find some real nuggets of knowledge, if you are willing to dig deep.

• The business side of a freelance creative lifestyle can often be stressful and isolating. Being Freelance, hosted by Steve Folland, targets these topics while keeping it casual, entertaining and straight to the point.

• Started as a chat between friends, The Honest Designers Show is a transparent look into the life of the modern designer. Learning how to land your first client, developing a unique style in your work, or simply realising that other folk are going through the same challenges that you’re facing are some of the topics these guys delve into.

Biz Buds is a value-packed weekly discussion from successful creative entrepreneurs Mike Janda and Tom Ross. They share their journeys from struggling freelancers to both running multi 7-figure businesses, and the lessons picked up along the way.

Beauty
Yes, I know this next category is a bit random, thrown into this mix, but bear with me. I don’t really feel like listening to design or entrepreneurship every single day and on these days I turn towards my next big passion. I must confess that am a sucker for skin care, beauty products and fashion. I have a keen eye for monochrome styling and love to consume loads of this content on repeat. If you, like me, are passionate on these topics here are some of my favourite podcasters to tune in:

• First up is Breaking Beauty. This podcast is hosted by the wonderful duo of beauty editors Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins. If you like to know what is the next big thing in beauty and skin care then you can have your weekly dose every Wednesday with this duo.

• Marrying delightfully unfiltered commentary with a wide array of knowledge, Fat Mascara hosts Jessica Matlin and Jennifer Goldstein harness their expertise as beauty editors to discuss industry news, must-have products, and innovative new procedures.

• Randy and Perry give listeners a scientific deep dive into beauty without the jargon, on their podcast The Beauty Brains. This cosmetic science double act manages to educate and inform in the most humorous way, helping you learn what cosmetic products and ingredients actually work.

Have you listened to any of these before? If so, which? What are some of your favourite podcasts? Please do let us know. I can’t wait to read all your comments!
