Components of a Visual Brand - Choosing the Colour Palette that reflects your Brand Personality

Welcome back to another discovery session regarding the components of your brand. Last week we suggested steps to consider when designing your brand logo, and you have now (let’s imagine) gone through this process and narrowed down an unique logo for your business. So what comes next?

Colour, colour, colour…..I’m sure you’ve had problems, like I have, when choosing the perfect colour for your fall season coat, the perfect lipstick colour (don’t even get me started with the array of shades there!) or the perfect sofa colour that is both practical and stylish. And now you need to choose the perfect colour palette for your brand? Where do you even begin? Speaking to clients and fellow colleagues, I’ve come across similar struggles when diving into what colour palette to select for a specific brand.

As we all suspect, the world of colour can be a wonderful opportunity to tap into that brand personality that you and your designer have honed in, while deciding the core values and brand purpose. But how do you navigate such a vast field and make it right for your brand? That is why we have shared some insight through the first part of this development.

At the start of this process, we start off with a few questions that will enrich the brand’s core values and determine what their colour should be. As a whole, these will steer us in the right direction and set the bases for the brand’s colour palette.

1. What 3 adjectives best describe your brand?
Is your brand: energetic, romantic, relaxed, upbeat, chic, serious?

2. If your brand were a season, which one would it be?
Does your brand tend more towards being fresh and feminine like Spring, playful and vibrant like Summer, warm and cozy like Fall, cool and minimal like Winter?

3. What do you want your audience feel when experiencing your brand?
What kind of emotion do you want to evoke?

4. What does your ideal client/customer like? Look like? Talk about?

Once we have answers for these questions, there are a couple of other things to bear in mind:

Timeless over Trendy
If you are planning on having your business for a while, it is important to choose colours that will remain timeless instead of colours that are currently trendy. When you choose timeless colours, your brand will need fewer updates to stay current, leading to stronger brand recognition.

Staying Relevant
It’s important to pick colours that are relevant to your brand’s values, mission, and purpose. Your brand colours should be a unique reflection of your business and your services and relevant to your brand’s mission.

Stay true to yourself
While your brand should appeal to your audience, it is also a direct reflection of you. It’s important that your brand colours are something that you love and can live with.

Keep tuned in, as we will be addressing the other brand components during the coming weeks!
